I remember the Airline Drive Inn as well as the Irvington! When I was in my early teens, my mother would take a car load of us just about every weekend - we could cram about 8-10 kids into the station wagon and she would take snacks and drinks - once we got there we would all unload and go up front and watch the show. Mama would usually be asleep when we all came back to the car. Fast forward a dozen years or so - my sister-in-law had 3 stairstep kiddos and I just had one back then - we would take the same old station wagon and lay the seats down - the kids would play and watch the movie and finally fall asleep - we'd try to get them in the house and into bed without waking them up. (not a big leap from "date night" to "girls night out"!

Those were the days -- can't count the number of mosquito bites and all the times we would get so hot and sweat so bad we had to prop open the doors and keep our feet on the light switch just to get some air - but it sure was fun!

Paul,

Jean Vandever Goedecke and I are planning the 50th year reunion of the class of '62. We have the date set for August 18, 2012 and the location is The Northwest Forest Conference Center in Cypress, Tx. We hope to have some informal get-to-gethers prior to the event and we do have some rooms blocked off for those coming from out of town. Jean and I also plan on staying at the Center on Friday and Saturday night. I remember my sisters Pam, Brenda and Bridgett took me and my brother Ed and before we got there, my other sisters put Brenda in the trunk and sneaked her in, but even after we parked they left her in there for a while longer, boy she was pissed, banging and hollering, Pam and Bridgett snickering.

When I was 9 or 10, I was jumping from the monkey bars there (they had a playground in front), a kid ran under me and I flipped and got knocked out, the next thing I remember my brother Ed was carrying me back to the van with a broken arm.

I remember right before they closed, Willie Nelson with others had a concert there, They preformed in front of the screen.

I noticed in today's paper that Mr. Starr, who was the woodshop teacher at Burbank Jr. High passed away on February 11. I know he was my first homeroom teacher in Jr. High and thought some of my classmates would be interested in knowing.

I worked summers for HISD during the late '60s and early '70s. We helped move equipment out of the downtown Sam Houston before it was demolished. It was a grand old building.

The Granada was great. I haven't thought about it in years. They normally had a double feature with a "kiddie" show on Saturday morning...and cartoons and an old serial (Flash Gordon, etc.) I once won a yo-yo from Cadet Don doing a promo there. My neighbor was an usher for a while and he would sneak us sodas and candy bars. The balcony was off limits to kids because they would throw popcorn over the rails.

Like Linda Trcalek...I spent all my time on the Roller Coaster. Came in the gate. went and spent all my money on tickets and used every one on the roller coaster.

Things that went around and around made me very dizzy and very sick.

I think now i would be terrified to get on one. they are much bigger and much faster.

I remember Playland Park also. My husband and I dated there. Brings back lots of good times. We didn't have Astro World so that was the fun place to go to ride rides. Roller Coaster was great. Just a good place to spend time with your date.....

I remember the Granad Theatre very well... It was my Saturday every week. I saw most of Elvis Presley's shows there. Remember the "Black Widow" series. I watched it every week. Good memories....It was brand new when I first started going there so I guess that dates me but I spent a lot of time in that theatre. Also the North Houston Theatre was down the road at Luell and Jensen. They were my Saturday shows according to what was being shown.....Great times....
