I saw some of my favorite childhood movies at the Granada, like 'The Killer Shrews," "Kal-Tiki," "TheFly." and "Jason And The Argonauuts."  Perhaps someone could answer this question that's been nagging me for years:  Was it the Granada that had the giant clowns ornamenting the walls in the theater?

I don't remember the clowns at the Granada, but that does not mean they were not on the walls. I remember seeing vampire movies on Saturdays that I would just soak right up. Each Saturday, I left the theater convinced that they lurked outside my bedroom window each night! Good times!

I lived across the street from the Granada until I was 11. I walked manage Mr Pullen's black cocker spaniel   every Saturday morning and he gave me a ticket (5 cents) and a drink/popcorn. Since I didn't have any money, it was a way for me to go to the movies. There were several cartoons, a serial and 2 feature length films.I was really upset when they raised the price of the tickets to a dime! Seemed that most of the films were Westerns. One of my favorite actors of the time was Rod Cameron. Jim Olive/class of '63

My mom used to work at the Henke Pilot (Kroger) supermarket in the same shopping center and would take us to work with her on Saturday mornings so we could walk down to the Granada and catch the movies and we'd bring our own popcorn in a grocery bag. Afterwards we'd go to the Five and Dime store and browse the toys. Remember "lay-a-way", if we saw something cool, we'd put it on lay-a-way and more often than not forget about it.

What was the other theatre down Jensen? Down past Weingarten's... We used to go there too, depending on what was playing.

The  theatre down the road was the North Houston theatre. I just remember it always had sticky floors. I spent many of my Saturday mornings and Friday evenings when I got older at the Granada.  North to Alaska, Psycho, The Shaggy Dog, The Sonny  & Cher movie are a few that I remember the most.

I remember that you could not go in the balcony until you were 16.  Never did make it upstairs!  By then we were going to the drive-in.  Spent every Saturday for many years at the Granada.  Dad dropped us off at 11:30 and picked us up at 6 PM.  We were in a world of our own and it was a cheap babysitter for parents to have some time together. debby hudson '68

Good Lord, the Granada Theater.  We lived there every Saturday...Remember the big jar of pickles they sold?  I dearly loved those pickles...saw the scariest movie I had ever seen there..."The Blob" with Steve McQueen...I went home and got cans, put the bed legs inside the cans and filled the cans with ice, so the blob couldn't slither up the legs and absorb me.  Of course, by the next morning the bed legs were in cans of water, and my mama spanked me, and told me I didn't need to go see any more scary movies.

I was eleven years old, and far too old to be that scared...but at least I was smart enough to know that ice would freeze it.  Just not smart enough to realize the ice would melt, and my butt would get spanked.

I remember my cousin taking me and dropping me off to have a photo made at that shopping center.  I then went to see Gone With The Wind all dressed up and by myself.  Couldn't find anyone to go with me and I wanted to see that movie.  Everytime I went there, no matter who I was with, Mama would always tell me "don't leave the theater because you never know if I will be back checking on you".  The one time I left with Darlene Box I had a lousy time because I kept thinking Mama would show up while I was gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh....the checking up on...we were safe from NO ONE.  My neighbors were allowed to tattle on us, lol.  I actually skipped school ONE time, and it was good...Jimmy Bailey picked me up and we spent the day at Galveston...I couldn't believe I never got caught.  I got caught at EVERYTHING....but to this day, I treasure the one time I did something so BAD, and it was good.

I used to go to Buddy's Roller Rink and leave with my boyfried and I also got caught!  My Mom showed up early to pick me up and was waiting on me to get back.  lol

Well Mama didn't show up at the theater so I could have had a really good time, but just thinking she might show up prevented that from happening!!!!

I remember the Granad Theatre very well... It was my Saturday every week.  I saw most of Elvis Presley's shows there.  Remember the "Black Widow" series.  I watched it every week.  Good memories....It was brand new when I first started going there so I guess that dates me but I spent a lot of time in that theatre.  Also the North Houston Theatre was down the road at Luell and Jensen.  They were my Saturday shows according to what was being shown.....Great times....

The Granada was great. I haven't thought about it in years. They normally had a double feature with a "kiddie" show on Saturday morning...and cartoons and an old serial (Flash Gordon, etc.) I once won a yo-yo from Cadet Don doing a promo there. My neighbor was an usher for a while and he would sneak us sodas and candy bars. The balcony was off limits to kids because they would throw popcorn over the rails.

devilOMG, I cannot believe how crazy I was in the 7th grade even though I was mostly an A student at Fonville! My parents were at Melrose Baptist at least 3 times a week and of course I was expected to be there too, unless sick on my deathbed.  It was on Jensen just a block away from the Granada. So a few times, Deborah Denise Sanders and I slipped away from church and went to the Granada without our parents knowledge. We carried "church keys " for protection (can openers) and were kicked out and chased away by an usher one time for misbehaving.

The Granada was where I had my first ever "French kiss" too!    kisssurprise
