Betty Lee Brockman Bounds, Class of 1965, passed away on January 9, 2021. Here's the post I shared on the FB pages: 1965 Sam Houston H S, Class of 1965  and Sam Houston HS In Loving Memory of All Fallen Tigers:

One of the hardest announcements I’ll have to make here is that one of my two best friends from, and since, high school has passed away.Betty Brockman Bounds, age 73, died Saturday morning, January 9, 2021, at her home in Spring, after an illness of several years. Betty is survived by her husband of almost 52 years, Andrew Bounds, also a 1965 classmate, as well as their daughters Jennifer, Amanda and son, Greg, two grandchildren and sister, Rebecca (Becky) Brockman Noland.

Betty was born in Houston on July 18, 1947 to Emmett and Dorothy Corner Brockman and lived at 821 E. Rogers in Houston. Her parents and brother, Robert, predeceased her. Betty attended Burbank Elementary and Jr. High and was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church.

At Sam Houston HS, Betty served on the Aegis newspaper staff, where she and I met in our first journalism class, our junior year. She held the Aegis positions of Feature Editor, Co- assistant Editor and Editor-in-Chief. She was also a member of Quill and Scroll, National Honor Society, the Latin Club, Student Council and the Future Teachers of America. Betty ranked # 6 in our graduating class of over 600.

After Sam Houston HS, Betty received her college degree from Sam Houston State University and taught in several schools before retiring from Klein ISD.

Betty and I became close friends during the two years that we worked on the Aegis together, spending many hours in the newspaper workroom, at Scardino printers and double dating. Our different personalities just meshed really well. She was even tempered and she held her own with my bossy nature. She met
Carol Windham (nee Melder) through me, and another lifelong friendship developed.

Betty and I roomed together at SHSU our first semester before I transferred to the University of Houston. That was a memorable bonding time sharing our dorm room with one bathroom between us and our four, yes, four suite mates for all six of us. There were many laughs. We both worked on the university newspaper together, where a few years later, she served as Editor.

With Carol, we were bridesmaids in each other’s weddings, our 8 children were fairly close in age and our families spent a lot of fun times together over the years. The three families had an annual Christmas dinner together for many years. And, Betty is my daughter Lisa’s Godmother. I cherish all of the memories and the wonderful friendship that we had for 57 years. Rest in Peace, my dear friend.
I will share her obituary when it posts on the Earthman’s Resthaven web site. There will be private family service later in the month.

Weldon Bailey pic fixed

John Weldon Bailey, age 78, of Crockett passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021 at his home. Weldon was born October 6, 1942 in Pasadena to parents, Joseph Weldon Bailey and Opal Irene Friday Bailey. He was the middle of five children, growing up Trinity then moving to Westville, TX where all seven lived behind a store.  Weldon said he did not remember wearing shoes until the sixth grade. The family then moved to the Woodlake Trading Post outside of Groveton, he attended primary school there then moved to Houston attending Burbank Jr High School and graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1961. During high school, he took mechanic classes but worked as a meat cutter nights and weekends. Weldon served in the United States Army Reserve from 1963 to 1969.  In 1968, he met the love of his life, Brenda Sue Boyette, they made plans to elope to St. Louis where he was stationed but plans changed when Brenda’s oldest sister, Wanda, found out. He returned to Houston alone but they were married two months later enjoying 51 years of marriage together.

Weldon opened his first business in Houston near Northline Mall in 1969 next opened a 66 Station on Canino Road in the early 1970’s. He realized his true calling was auto repairs opening his own shop on Little York and Airline making many lasting friendships.  In 1979, Weldon and Brenda made the decision to move to Crockett after selling his business in Houston. He worked for Jim Ulrich from 1980 to 1983 but feeling the need to be his own boss again, he purchased the Goodyear Franchise operating from 1983 to 1988 then deciding to go independent, opened Weldon Bailey’s Auto Center on Loop 304 East where it continues today.

Weldon loved anything with a motor and it was not unusual to find him at the racetrack as he had a passion for drag racing owning several cars including ’55 Chevy also a couple of corvettes affectionately named “Transmission Eater” and “Squirrelly”.  In 1979, he purchased the 1968 Nova with 4000 miles on it, today still same mileage 50 years later. Weldon was referred to as Bump with racing due to the car bumper touching the ground after a wheelly. He won his class in the NHRA Winter Nationals in Pomona, California along with several other NHRA division races. Racing in Porter, TX for many years, it was not unheard of to race in one state on Saturday and other on Sunday being paid by racetracks to make appearances. Weldon went from drag racing for trophies to BBQ cook-offs with his best friend, the late Jimmy Wages, building the pit of their dreams in 1994. Never a dull moment with these two, they turned BBQ cooking into large parties and family gatherings also making their rounds to all contests from Lovelady Lovefest to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo BBQ Contest to the Meridian World Championships. Sometime winning, sometimes not, but ALWAYS a wonderful party either way.

Weldon has been a member of the Crockett Elks Lodge since 1980 holding several offices including Secretary, Vice President and Exalted Ruler locally and State Vice President of the East District where he was over five lodges, also was District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of Texas, still a member to this day.

Weldon and Brenda have three beautiful children, Stacy Lynn born December 7, 1970, Melanie Sue born February 23, 1972 and Jeffrey Weldon born August 2 1975. In 1993, Weldon “ Bump” Bailey gained a new and his favorite name “Poppy” to Justin, Jenifer, Mandie, Emily, Riley, Taylor, Jaime and Lexie who became his new loves, these still think going to Poppy and Bebe’s house is still the most fun getaway.

Weldon is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brenda Boyette Bailey; daughters, Stacy Lynn Dise and husband, Jerry, Melanie Sue Cotyk and husband, Jim; son, Jeffrey Weldon Bailey; grandchildren, Justin, Emily, Riley, Taylor, Jaime, Lexi, Jenifer and husband, Joel, Mandie and husband, Blake; great-grandsons, Deacon and Asher; sisters, Mae McGann and husband, Mike, Sue Gumm and husband, Ray; sister-in-law, Joy Taylor and husband, Joe; host of nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by parents, Joseph Weldon and Opal Irene Friday Bailey; brothers, Hayne Bailey and Jimmy Bailey, father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Juanita Boyette; sisters-in-law, Nora Bailey, Wanda Box; and brother-in-law, Brian Box.

Memorial services for John Weldon Bailey will be held at 12 noon Saturday, January 16, 2021 in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Crockett Elks Lodge or the American Legion.

What a beautiful legacy. I'm sure our paths crossed often, since my parents retired to Centerville, where Crockett was the go to place. Rest in peace John Bailey.

OBITUARY

Betty Bounds

JULY 18, 1947  JANUARY 9, 2021
Obituary of Betty Bounds

BETTY LEE BROCKMAN BOUNDS, 73, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021 in Spring, TX. She was born on July 18, 1947 in Houston, TX. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Dorothy Brockman and her brother Robert Brockman. She is survived by her husband of almost 52 years, Andrew Bounds, daughter Jennifer Bounds, daughter Amanda Baumle and husband Larry, son Gregory Bounds and wife May, two grandchildren, Gwen and Leo Baumle, and her sister Rebecca (Becky) Brockman Noland and husband Dennis. Betty graduated with honors from Sam Houston High School in May 1965 and was ranked 6th in a graduating class numbering slightly over 600. In high school, she began taking courses in journalism and served as the school paper’s Feature Editor, Co-Assistant Editor, and Editor-in-Chief. After graduation, she enrolled as a Journalism major at Sam Houston State University. She was selected for membership into Sam Houston’s Press Club based on grades and self-improvement in the journalistic field during her sophomore year. In her junior year, she received mention as Who’s Who based on her work as Houstonian Copy Editor, Editor-in-Chief, and member of the News Bureau. She also received scholarships from the Jesse Jones Foundation, the Mary McAshan Gibbs award, and the Houston Press Club. She was elected a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society in her junior year. Betty graduated with honors from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in both Journalism and English (her Dad insisted that she get a teaching certificate hence the two fields). Betty and Andrew Bounds met in high school in 1964. Their first date was to the National Forensic Society’s banquet. Agreeing to attend meant that Betty missed her annual newspaper banquet in her senior year, but she said (despite some initial hard feelings!) she never regretted the decision. She dated him during the end of high school. Separate colleges briefly interrupted the relationship, but they resumed dating in 1967. Betty and Andrew got married on January 25th 1969 at Bethel Baptist Church where she and her family were active members. After graduation from college, Betty was offered a job in the registrar’s office as the catalog editor for Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. As catalog editor, Betty was responsible for planning, and organizing the development of the university’s catalog. She not only met frequently with the individual college departments but, in the age prior to computers and word processing, met with artists, typesetters, and layout personnel. She was well thought of when the time came to move back to Houston. Betty had a long career as an early childhood and elementary educator. She received her State Board for Education Certification from the state of Texas which authorized her to practice as a Classroom Teacher. She taught for over twenty years in both private and public schools. She retired from the Klein Independent School District where she taught second grade. Betty’s greatest rewards in life were her children and grandchildren. She instilled in all of her children a love of education and reading, as well as the practice of spending regular time talking to Mom about their days – something that continued throughout her life in frequent phone calls. Shortly after her retirement, she began caring for her first grandchild, Gwen, and loved to spend time telling and writing stories with her and working on arts and crafts projects. She later played the same important role in her grandson, Leo’s, life. A graveside service will be held at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home and Cemetery on Monday, January 18, 2020, at noon for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to Houston’s Writers in the Schools (WITS) program in recognition of Betty’s lifetime devotion to education, or to a charity of your choice, in her name.

***The family has requested that this service be intended for immediate family only. Thank you for your understanding during this very difficult time.***

Beth Green (McConnell) (1973)

I am so sorry for your loss. She sounds like an extraordinary woman who influenced many lives. I think I might have known Andrew, having grown up in St Alban's Episcopal Church. Although I didn't know him well, I had his mother, Gwen, as a Sunday School teacher. I always thought, and still remember her as an elegant, kind, and beautiful woman who had the most intriguing accent and sparkling eyes. I made the connection when I noticed that one of the grandchildren is named Gwen. My condolences to all.

Condolences to the family of 1957 Elton Shoemaker on January 27, 2021 in Charlotte, NC. due to complications related to Covid-19.

Elton's family had many SH Tigers - his sisters Yvonne, class of '59, Amelia '62, Ava, '65 and brother Dennis, class of 1969 (dec 3/29/20). The family lived at 1002 Majorca. Dennis' wife Susan Kay Steele Shoemaker was class of 1958. They married July 11, 1958.

OBITUARY

Elton LaRoy Shoemaker Sr.

March 6, 1939January 27, 2021
Obituary of Elton LaRoy Shoemaker Sr.

Charlotte lost a beloved member of our community on January 27th, 2021 when longtime resident Elton LaRoy Shoemaker Sr. passed away due to complications related to Covid-19.

Elton was born March 6, 1939 to Roy and Emily Shoemaker in Cherokee, Texas. He was the oldest of seven children.

Elton graduated from Sam Houston High School and married his high school sweetheart, Susan Kay Steele (Susie), in 1958. He attended the University of Houston and pursued a major in business with a concentration in retail management. Elton would utilize his education, interest in retailing, and work ethic to climb the retail ladder. He would become a district manager at W.T. Grant Co. and Roses stores, own a hardware store (Hipps Hardware of Charlotte), partner with Susan to open Fantacy’s at the Overstreet Mall and Charlotte Douglas Airport and serve as interim CEO for Mecklenburg Co. ABC.

Elton enjoyed and took an active role in local politics. Specifically, he ran for Charlotte City Council, attended the "Thursday Morning" political forum, often wrote "letters to the editor" published in the Charlotte Observer and helped fundraise and support other local politicians’ campaigns.

Together, Elton and Susan went on to raise three children. While Elton worked hard professionally, was active in politics, and an ardent basketball (ACC) fan, his true passion was spending time with family. “Pop” valued attending his children’s and grandchildren’s recitals, sporting events, graduations, birthdays or anything else that gave him a reason to be involved in their lives.

Elton was preceded in death by Elton Jr. and his brother Dennis. He is survived by his beloved wife (Susie); sisters, Yvonne, Amelia, and Ava; two children, Stacy (A.J.) and Jack (Ann); seven grandchildren, Trey, Jace (Katie), Jenna (Anthony), John, Amy (Taylor), Adam (Lanie), Olivia; and five great grandchildren: Andi, Tripp, Skylar, Cameron and Asher.

He will be greatly missed.

A service to celebrate Elton's life will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 5th at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. His family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

Condolences may be offered at www.mcewenpinevillechapel.com.

I lived at 909 Majorca down the street from the Shoemakers home.  We had a grocery store across the railroad track on East Hardy.  So I went to Coop Elementary instead of the school attended by the Shoemakers.  So I never got to know the family despite the fact that the Shoemakers were obviously the dominant family of kids on the block.  I was keenly aware of Elton and Yvonne as they preceded me at Sam Houston and I looked up to them.

Many of you know how crazy things have been over the last several months. To make matters worse, I was in Facebook jail for 30 days and they disabled my account after that. I have finally gotten my act together and have a new account. Instead of "Steve Shepherd", it is now "Steven Shepherd". If you want to send me a friend request, or get one from me, don't be afraid to accept it. I had 1500 friends and I'm at less than 200 now. I'm ready for more warm weather. After the subzero here in Arkansas, we had 80 degrees here yesterday 2/24/21.
